DEHRADUN: Heavy overnight rains along with high speed winds occurred on Monday in Dehradun, uprooting many trees and affecting power supply for over 12 hours.
The rain that started after midnight continued till dawn. There was no power throughout the night in the state capital which was already facing high humidity. A tree fell down near Parade ground disrupting the high tension lines that connects the nearby areas.
“The power supply of Parade Ground, Aragarh Chowk, Hathibarkala, parts of Sahatradhara and Niranjanpur was affected badly. We started the work in all theses areas early morning but the lines were damaged too much. By 12 noon power supply was resumed in all these areas,” said an official of Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited.
A transformer fell down along with the wall on which it was installed near Mohini Road and residents of Dalanwala, Teg Bahdur Road, Municipal Road had to go without electricity till 11 am.
Residents claim that this is a usual scenario in the town with the onset of monsoon. “The long power cut implies that monsoon has arrived. The electricity department claims every year that it is ready to face the heavy rainfall but nothing happens,” said Mala Sinha, a resident of Nehru Colony
